Thoughts on the 2010 FIFA World Cup: H.E. Giampaolo Cutillo, Consul General of Italy

What is your message to the football team and what are your views on South Africa hosting the FIFA World Cup?

I wish that football always remains a universal instrument that helps to promote world peace and offers the opportunity to foster international competition and brotherhood and thereby a more united world. We wish South Africa the very best in its endeavour to promote economic growth and its image as host country around the world.

How far do you think your team will advance?

Italy is the defending World Cup Champion and will be under additional pressure to perform well. Although it is difficult to make history repeat itself, it would be wrong to undermine Italy’s chances in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Italy is one of the traditional powers and often performs best when it really matters (the only country, except for Brazil, to win the World Cup at least four times) and will definitely be counted among the favourites.

Who according to you are the top 3 favourite teams to win the FIFA World Cup in South Africa?

Argentina, Brazil and Italy.

Who is your  favourite to win the “Golden Boot” award?

Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

What is your message to the football team and what are your views on South Africa hosting the FIFA World Cup?

I have one message to our players: play with that characteristic Argentine style that has made it famous so far – with skill and with love for the country that they represent.

It is marvelous that the World Cup will be taking place in South Africa for the first time since its inception. This bears witness to the importance of African football in the world, as well as to the level that it has reached.

How far do you think your team will advance?

I hope Argentina reaches the finals. The national team is a competitive one, comprised as it is of excellent sportsmen, most of whom play for some of the best football clubs in Europe.

Who according to you are the top 3 favourite teams to win the FIFA World Cup in South Africa?

I think that Argentina, Brazil and Spain could be amongst the three favourite teams to win the World Cup. However, I must mention that England is also poised to win. Along with Brazil, England is one of our traditional adversaries with whom the team has played some unforgettable matches.

Who is your  favourite to win the “Golden Boot” award?

I hope that it is an Argentine player – perhaps it will be Messi, if I may say so!

Thoughts on the 2010 FIFA World Cup: H.E. Fausto Godoy, Consul General of Brazil

What is your message to the football team and what are your views on South Africa hosting the FIFA World Cup?

My message to the team is the same that all Brazilians would propose: play fair, do your best, honour the sport of football and thrill the approximately 200 million Brazilians who will put all their hearts into this World Cup.

As for South Africa hosting the event, it is high time that the African continent comes into the limelight of sports. South Africa is a very important world player and the visibility it will receive during the World Cup will help to open even wider doors.

How far do you think your team will advance?

Hopefully, to the final match!

Who according to you are the top 3 favourite teams to win the FIFA World Cup in South Africa?

I have only one favourite and I don’t need to specify it (smiles).

Who is your  favourite to win the “Golden Boot” award?

There are many talented players. Football, like any other sports competition, is unpredictable. It is difficult to choose a favourite.

Thoughts on 2010 FIFA World Cup: H.E. Walter Stechel, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany

What is your message to the football team and what are your views on South Africa hosting the FIFA World Cup?

Despite having to deal with recent tragedies and unexpected injuries, I know the German team will unite and play to their fullest potential. I wish the team the best of success and join in with fans from across the globe who will cheer them on.

Similar to when Germany had the opportunity to showcase itself  to the world in 2006, I am sure that visitors will experience and explore the magnificence of  South Africa like never before.

How far do you think your team will advance?

Going by the “laws of nature“ in terms of Germany’s recent performances: 2006 FIFA World Cup – 3rd place, 2008 European Championship – 2nd Place, we should become World Cup Champions in 2010!

Who according to you are the top 3 favourite teams to win the FIFA World Cup in South Africa?

Italy, as defending champions, should not be underestimated. Brazil is always counted among the favourites. And of course, Germany! One should not forget, however, the home-advantage for the participating African teams.

Who is your  favourite to win the “Golden Boot” award?

Either Lionel Messi or Arjen Robben, who had a fantastic season with Bayern Munich FC –  and keep an eye on Stefan Kiessling!

The Netherlands (Holland), Brazil and England.

Who is your  favourite to win the “Golden Boot” award?
